⚠ CAUTION ⚠ Poisonous plant! Any part of this plant can be fatal if ingested by humans, and cats have also been known to eat leaves and react badly.

⚠ CAUTION ⚠ Potentially invasive plant! Datura plants have potential to reproduce prolifically in the right climates. Please take care to prevent seeds from reaching the wild if this specific species of Datura does not grow in your area.

Common Name: Sacred Datura
Species: Datura wrightii
Cultivar: Unknown / General
USDA Zone: Annual in 5-7, short-lived perennial in 8-10
Sun: Full sun
Soil: Well-draining organic soil. 70-80% potting soil mixed with 20-30% cactus soil or perlite may be one easily accessible option.
Water: Frequently. I personally water every 1-3 days when it's 85° F or more, and 3-7 days when cooler. If leaves begin to droop despite frequent watering, it is overwatered and you should water less frequently.
Fertilizer: Frequently during hotter periods for vigorous growth, but will also do just fine on lower amounts of fertilizer. When growth slows down in the colder season, fertilizer should begin to be applied less frequently.

"Datura wrightii, commonly known as sacred datura, is a poisonous perennial plant species and ornamental flower of the family Solanaceae native to the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is sometimes used as a hallucinogen due to its psychoactive alkaloids. D. wrightii is classified as an anticholinergic deliriant.

Datura wrightii is sacred to some Native Americans and has been used in ceremonies and rites of passage by Chumash, Tongva, and others. Among the Chumash, when a boy was 8 years old, his mother gave him a preparation of momoy to drink. This was supposed to be a spiritual challenge to the boy to help him develop the spiritual well being required to become a man. Not all of the boys survived. The Zuni people also use the plant for ceremonial, magical, and divinatory purposes. The root pieces are chewed by a robbery victim to determine the identity of the thief. The powdered root is also used by rain priests in a number of ways to ensure fruitful rains.

All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of anticholinergic tropane alkaloids and may be fatal if ingested by humans, livestock, or pets. In some places, it is prohibited to buy, sell or cultivate Datura plants. Unlike other types of datura, the roots are considered the most potent and alkaloid-rich part of this species." See this thread for a guide on how to store the tuberous root of the Datura plant after the growing season ends. This is useful if you live in a climate suitable for annual growth but not perennial growth, and do not have indoor space for the datura: https://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1051779/#b

-----------

• No shipments to Louisiana or other locations which have outlawed the cultivation of Datura.
• International customers assume any risk of seeds being held up in, or seized by, customs - but Datura is a pretty hardy plant. I'd expect them to grow even if the seeds take a while to reach you, but I can't guarantee it.
